"METAMORPHOSIS"
Explorations
In this project, we explored transformation of shapes from solid state, to liquid and then back to solid. We start with the rock, then as it falls on the ground it melts into liquid. After that it freezes again into solid. Visual Tone is dark and industrial with clean lighting. Most prevalent colors are black and grey with subtle hint of blue-ish lighting. So dark rock became dark liquid; Only at the end the blue colors spreads as the liquid freezes.
Creative Direction & Visual Tone
In this project, we explored the transformation of a shape as it moves from a solid state, to liquid, and then back to solid again. The piece begins with a rock, which falls to the ground and melts into a fluid mass. After the splash settles, the liquid gradually freezes back into solid form. The goal was to create a smooth, story-driven metamorphosis that gives both physical and surreal feeling.
The visual tone is dark and industrial, supported by clean lighting. The palette is dominated by blacks and greys, with a subtle hint of blue in the highlights. The rock begins as a dark object and transitions into an equally dark liquid. Only at the end, during the freezing phase, does the blue tint spread across the surface, emphasizing the cold crystallization.
Process
The rock setup and camera animation were handled in Blender. For the melting and splash phase, Houdini was the main tool, where we experimented with a more unconventional approach to dissolving a solid and forming a liquid simulation. Achieving a convincing splash required many iterations. The freezing effect was created through a custom growth mask that drives the frost expansion.
